Clifford's Tower
Clifford's Tower is a historic tower in York, England, located on a mound that is part of the original motte-and-bailey castle of York. It is the most substantial remaining part of York Castle. The current stone tower was built in the 13th century after the original wooden tower was destroyed by fire. It has a distinctive quatrefoil plan, a rare design for a medieval keep.
The tower is associated with significant historical events, including the 1190 massacre of York's Jewish community, where many took refuge and ultimately perished within its walls. It later served as a treasury and a prison. Clifford's Tower is currently managed by English Heritage and offers panoramic views of York from its summit.
