Yorkshire Air Museum
The Yorkshire Air Museum & Allied Air Forces Memorial, located at the former RAF Elvington airfield near York, is the largest independent air museum in the UK and the only Allied Air Forces Memorial in Europe. Situated on a historic Second World War RAF Bomber Command station, it offers a deep dive into aviation history.
The museum features a diverse collection of over 50 aircraft, ranging from replicas of early flyers to iconic World War II bombers (including a fully restored Halifax) and Cold War jets. Visitors can explore interactive exhibits, witness aircraft restoration in progress, and enjoy special events. The site also includes original wartime buildings, such as a restored 1942 RAF Control Tower and a replica French officers' mess, reflecting its history as a base for French bomber crews. The museum is dog-friendly and provides a café, gift shop, and ample parking.
